Medical Board of California Special Programs
The California Medical Board Division of Licensing administers special programs (Sections 2111, 2113, and 2168) for international medical graduates who seek postgraduate training or are being recruited as faculty members in an approved California medical school.
Turnaround time for Special License Applications with the CA Medical Board is a minimum of 3 to 4 months.
Please submit all Renewals 60 days prior to the current end date.
Please contact your assigned Dean's Analyst if you plan to offer a special license.

2111 appointments may be renewed annually for up to 3 years maximum UC system wide. Each approval is for 12 months at a time. Approvals are non-transferrable from other UC’s. A new application is required for location of appointment.
- Renewal forms to be completed by the department 60 days before the approval is due to expire accompanied with the renewal fees.
Visa and job duties will determine the type of appointment
- Departments will work with the Dean's office Academic Affairs Analyst to determine the appropriate appointment.
2113 appointment may be renewed annually for up to 3 years. An extension of 2 additional years may be approved when a licensing plan and ECFMG certification is provided to the medical board. Each approval is for 12 months at a time. Approvals are non-transferrable from other UC’s. A new application is required for location of appointment
- Renewal forms to be completed by the department 60 days before the approval is due to expire accompanied with the renewal fees.

- Departments will work with the Dean's office Academic Affairs Analyst to determine the appropriate appointment.
- Appointment as an HS Assistant Clinical Professor is our usual practice
- Clinical Activity should be 80% of appointment and 20% research
Practice is limited to UC Irvine and formally affiliated institutions only with unlimited renewals.
- Special faculty permit will not lead to an unrestricted medical license.
