As the Vice Dean for Medical Education, I am delighted to share with you some noteworthy information regarding our medical school.

The Office of Medical Education provides leadership and oversight for Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education. We proudly train more than 400 students and 650 residents each year.

A 5-time Apple Distinguished School honoree, the UCI School of Medicine has embraced technology as a core component of its education program for nearly a decade.

We have made a strategic commitment to reinvent the traditional medical school curriculum for the 21st century integrating technologies such as the iPad and hand-held ultrasound into the learning environment.

Our mission-based programs constitute another curricular initiative of high priority for the school. These mission-based programs focus on areas of healthcare for which a specific need has been identified including service to the Latino community, the African, Black and Caribbean community and integrative medicine. We are dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and clinical practice by offering a rich and diverse educational environment and welcome aspiring physicians to visit our school to see for themselves the innovative medical training offered here.

The mission of the UCI School of Medicine is to “Discover. Teach. Heal.” Our training programs embrace this mission.

Discover: We believe in providing a supportive environment for student-driven scholarly activities and research. UCI is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-designated Clinical Translational Sciences Center and manages a high level of federally funded research grants. Our university offers students the opportunity to engage in a broad range of investigative projects, from basic science to clinical translational and community-based research activities. With ready access to supportive research mentors, many of our students present and publish scholarly work during their training.

Teach: We believe in providing students with an educational experience that is dynamic and student friendly. We are pioneers in the use of instructional technologies in medical education. Our state of the art medical education building offers students access to our highly equipped simulation center, clinical skills center, and ultrasound center. Students interface daily with dedicated faculty who enjoy teaching the next generation of physicians. There is a strong sense of camaraderie among the students, residents and faculty. This student-friendly culture enhances the educational milieu for our trainees.

Heal: We believe in graduating compassionate physicians who will provide high quality, comprehensive care to their patients. UCI  has the only medical school in Orange County. This unique position offers our students and residents substantial access to a wide range of training opportunities. In addition to UCI Medical Center, our institution is affiliated with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Miller Children’s Hospital and CHOC Children’s Hospital. Through these varied training sites, our students gain exposure to a diverse patient population and wide range of clinical pathology.

In short, UCI offers incredible access to academic and clinical resources in an environment that is collegial and supportive. We welcome aspiring physicians to visit our school to see for themselves how their medical training can be exciting, enjoyable and rewarding.

With warmest regards,

Khanh-Van Le-Bucklin, MD, MEd
