Each GME program has specific clinical sites trainees will primarily be based. Below provides a comprehensive list of all School of Medicine GME clinical sites. UCI School of Medicine UCI School of Medicine is ranked among the top 50 medical schools in the nation for research by U.S. News & World Report. Our school has 24 departments, ranging from basic science to clinical, medical and surgical specialties, all with a strong commitment to research, clinical care and teaching. It's the primary training site for basic science and translational bench research opportunities. We are dedicated to fostering excellence in research. We achieve this by creating a collaborative environment that encourages our researchers to work together, sharing their expertise and knowledge. Additionally, we provide access to the latest technology and leverage UCI's extensive network of research centers and institutes to ensure our researchers have the necessary resources to make groundbreaking discoveries. Research Centers, Institutes & Programs UCI Medical Center The UCI Medical Center is the only university hospital in Orange County that offers acute and general care services. It has the county’s only Level I trauma center, American College of Surgeons-verified regional burn center and National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. It serves as the principal teaching and research hospital for UCI School of Medicine. UCI Medical Center has 456 beds, including a 45-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and over 400 specialty and primary care physicians. It offers a full complement of inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services. U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCI Medical Center as one of America’s Best Hospitals. It was also named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Solucient, a leading source of healthcare business intelligence. It is one of three California hospitals and 15 major teaching hospitals to receive this award. It is also one of only 59 hospitals nationally to be named to the Leapfrog Top Hospitals list for quality and safety. UCI Medical Center UCI Health UCI Health is Orange County's only academic health system and is home to renowned healthcare providers and leading-edge medical facilities. UCI Health offers clinical locations throughout the region. UCI Health UCI Douglas Hospital The UCI Douglas Hospital was opened in 2009 as the most state-of-the art hospital in the region. Designed to optimize healing, UCI Douglas Hospital has spacious, mostly private patient rooms. It also offers a collaborative environment for translational medicine – bringing promising treatments to our patients and providing a superior teaching facility to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. UCI Family Health Center — Santa Ana The UCI Family Health Center (FHC) in Santa Ana is the largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the county and serves as a model for the collaboration between the community and UCI Health. This 52,000-square-foot facility is located in close proximity to UCI Medical Center, and this important facility features a unique partnership that combines service to an underserved population in a setting that complements UCI School of Medicine's teaching activities. The patients of this clinic reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of Orange County. The center is located in an area designated as a medically underserved area. Because of this, the center is recognized as a National Health Service Corps site. UCI School of Medicine's activities at the center continue a longstanding tradition for which we have acquired an outstanding local and national reputation for our work with the medically underserved. The center is fully staffed with nursing and office personnel. There are 27 exam rooms, three fully equipped urgent care rooms and a procedure room equipped to train family medicine residents in common office procedures. UCI Student Health Center The UCI Student Health Center (SHC) is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, and internal medicine provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. SHC utilizes health provider student trainees such as fellows, residents and/or student interns, in conjunction with licensed professionals, to deliver services to UCI students. UCI Student Health Center Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a nationally ranked, free-standing acute care children's hospital located in the East Hollywood district of Los Angeles. Children's Hospital Los Angeles Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) is ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report. CHOC is the only children’s hospital in Orange County, which is the sixth most populous county in the nation, with approximately 3.2 million inhabitants. It's an academic, community-based hospital that has 334 beds, including a 30-bed PICU, 12-bed cardiac ICU, 72-bed NICU and separate oncology and neuroscience units. CHOC’s emergency department is a Level I pediatric trauma center. CHOC also operates primary care and specialty clinics throughout the county. The hospital serves about 2 million patients over four counties. The training and education of medical students, residents and fellows has been a longstanding focus of CHOC. Each year, CHOC trains about 290 residents and fellows from 38 different training programs, along with 190 medical students. CHOC CHOC Sharon Disney Lund Medical Intelligence, Information, Investigation & Innovation Institute (Mi4) The Sharon Disney Lund Medical Intelligence, Information, Investigation & Innovation Institute (Mi4) at CHOC is a unique and first-of-its-kind institute that creates, focuses and executes projects in the areas of intelligence and innovation in pediatric medicine. These two interrelated disciplines, extremely limited in development in the pediatric realm, hold great promise to change the trajectory of pediatric care worldwide. Mi4 aims to foster robust developments in artificial intelligence methodologies, as well as innovative advances in emerging areas such as genomic medicine, regenerative medicine, robotics, nanotechnology and medical applications/devices. Mi4 is dedicated to empowering data intelligence and medical innovation at CHOC and driving innovation leadership in the international pediatrics community. Mi4 Long Beach Memorial Hospital Long Beach Memorial Hospital is a full-service, private community hospital and trauma center in the Long Beach area. Its staff features a full complement of family physicians, internists, pediatricians and specialists from all disciplines. The hospital provides full medical and surgical inpatient services, including adult and pediatric intensive care units. The hospital also has an emergency room that serves as a local trauma center. VA Long Beach Healthcare System The VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) is one of the most diversified healthcare systems in Veteran Affairs, and it includes Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center located in Long Beach. VALBHS provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and extended care programs. The 1,000-bed facility is the healthcare provider of choice for more than 50,000 veterans. Already well established as a critical educational partner, the VA offers state-of-the-art technology, along with a strong commitment to high-quality education and advanced research, providing diverse experiences in primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, spinal cord injury, geriatrics and extended care. Some of its special programs and clinical offerings include a cardiac imaging lab, a comprehensive cancer center, a Preservation Amputation Care Treatment program, a Radiation Therapy program, the Spinal Cord Injury Center, the Women’s Health program and the Major Charles Robert Soltes Jr. Blind Rehabilitation Center. VA Long Beach Healthcare system Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach Miller Children's & Women's Hospital is located in Long Beach and has 357 licensed pediatric and women’s beds, with a professional pediatric faculty and staff of more than 870 board-certified hospitalists, pediatric specialists/subspecialists, surgical subspecialists and dentists, and nearly 100 board-certified physicians in the MemorialCare Center for Women. As a dedicated children's hospital, Miller Children's offers training experiences of great depth in fundamental as well as state-of-the-art pediatric medicine. Miller Children’s is home to one of the largest neonatal intensive care units in California and a regional pediatric trauma center.
