New Hospital Construction Updates

UCI Radiation Oncology is proud to be an integral part of the new 800,000 square foot UCI health sciences campus currently under construction in Irvine. This new Department of Radiation Oncology will serve as a complement to our existing clinical footprint at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange and will allow us to expand our services to the greater whole of Orange County. Featuring 3 brand new state-of-the-art linear accelerators and a cutting-edge brachytherapy suite, the new Department is expected to begin treating patients in 2023. A full array of innovative treatments and clinical trials will be offered, consistent with our mission of improving cancer care and pushing the limits of what can be achieved for our patients!

Scientists have known since the 1990s that virtually all cases of cervical cancer can be linked to HPV infections. Now, an increasing number of throat cancers may be due to HPV infection. Drs. Allen Chen and Tjoson Tjoa will discuss the latest research and why HPV-related throat cancers are now considered an epidemic. Dr. Allen Chen is renowned for his research in head and neck cancers and has been named among Best Doctors in America® 10 years in a row. Dr. Tjoson Tjoa specializes in the surgical treatment of head and neck cancer, major reconstructive surgery, microvascular techniques, thyroid surgery, salivary gland surgery, and skull base surgery.

UCI Health neurosurgeons successfully removed William Norris' brain tumor. But the track-and-field coach still needed radiation therapy to ensure that no tumor cells remained. With the image-guided TrueBeam™ STx linear accelerator, Norris had just one 10-minute radiation treatment, instead of the traditional 10 or 15 sessions over two to three weeks.

The TrueBeam system allows radiation oncology specialists at UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to precisely target the smallest, most hidden cancers with a power dose — all while protecting healthy tissue.
