Advancing Initiatives

We prioritize physician well-being through initiatives that enhance efficiency, professional satisfaction, and the delivery of care, including promoting work-life balance, organizing social activities, integrating talks on burnout and well-being into the curriculum, and planning an annual wellness retreat.

Although the practice of medicine can be incredibly meaningful and personally fulfilling, it is also demanding and stressful. By advancing initiatives that enhance efficiency, professional satisfaction and the delivery of care, UCI Radiation Oncology is always striving to help physicians navigate and succeed in a continually evolving health care environment. The Department places a high priority on work-life balance, and wellness is at the heart of everything we do. In addition to ongoing reflection thought leadership, research and advocacy, we look for ways to champion physician wellness through social activities (trivia nights, group hikes, wine-tasting, bowling, or sporting events) and the integration of talks on burnout and well-being into the didactic curriculum. An annual wellness retreat is also being planned.

Faculty development refers to a range of activities that are perceived to help academicians in improving their professional skills that are vital for carrying out their teaching, research or administrative activities in medical education.

The Department of Radiation Oncology's goal is to create and support a community of leaders in education and a culture of excellence in teaching and learning; fostering the careers of education in medicine and the sciences; providing educational workshops to improve the skills of instructors; stimulating and supporting the creation and implementation of innovative approaches to teaching and learning; and supporting the educational research and scholarship in medical and graduate education.

Ongoing training in equity, diversity and inclusion is an important part of faculty development. The faculty development series includes lectures on competency-based education; effective teaching; providing feedback (“the good, the bad and the ugly"); physician burnout; formulating a research agenda; teaching quality improvement; building productive teams; and leadership in medicine.

A perfect view of the Pacific Ocean, blue skies, palm trees and greenery

Orange County (or “The OC”) is simply one of the best places to live anywhere! Home to some of most beautiful beaches on Earth and blessed with year-round sunshine, it is no wonder that people move from all over the world to experience life here. The OC is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the United States and boasts family friendly neighborhoods, top-rated public schools, an unprecedented amount of “green space,” and amazingly gorgeous sunsets.

Consistently cited as one of the “safest places” around, the OC is also home to headquarters of such companies as Disney, Ingram Micro, Chipotle, Vans, Quiksilver, Taco Bell, Broadcom, Oakley, and In-N-Out Burger, among many, many others. For family fun, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim claims the title “Happiest Place on Earth” with two theme parks. Disneyland, the first Disney facility, reigns as the home of Mickey Mouse and features such areas as Frontierland, New Orleans Square, and Tomorrowland. At California Adventure, the Golden State gets its due in such areas as Pacific Wharf, Hollywood Land, and Buena Vista Street. For cultural attractions, Segerstrom Center for the Arts (aka Orange County Performing Arts Center) is considered one of the most important performing arts venues on the West Coast.

Also, there are museums such as the Bowers Museum, the UCI University Art Museum (known for its focus on California modernism), and the Laguna Art Museum which house important collections. Whether it’s outdoor activity, sporting events, live music, the cultural ats, or world-class shopping, the OC truly has something for everybody.
