Our faculty members are experts in blood banking and transfusion medicine, a field that encompasses all aspects of blood component procurement, manufacturing and transfusion. Our state-of-the-art facilities include a component processing laboratory, a transfusion services laboratory (blood bank), the therapeutic apheresis service and the UC Irvine blood donor center. We are also engaged in the collection of stem cells and cellular therapy starting material for hematopoietic stem cell collection, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and cellular therapy clinical trials.

Faculty members actively engage in clinical research related to transfusion medicine and hemostasis and in educating medical students, clinical laboratory science students, residents, fellows and other physicians.

Those who learn with us will be exposed to a range of environments and clinical modalities, including:

  • Sites for volunteer blood and platelet donation, including two fixed-site donor centers and mobile blood drives
  • Blood component manufacturing
  • Pre-transfusion and compatibility testing
  • Inpatient consultative services, including platelet refractoriness, alloimmunization to RBC antigens, evaluation of transfusion reactions, specialized component therapy recommendations and transfusion alternatives, and evaluation and management of therapeutic apheresis procedures
  • Pre-donation evaluation of stem cell donors (autologous and allogeneic) and cellular therapy collection candidates and medical oversight of stem cell and cellular therapy collections
  • Evaluation and management of patients requiring therapeutic apheresis, including therapeutic plasma exchange and automated red blood cell exchange
  • Laboratory consultation on clinical hemostasis/thrombosis, including the workup of coagulopathy and mass hemorrhage
