The department is fast-growing and fast-rising in case volume, faculty and NIH funding. We seek fellowship candidates who are highly motivated, industrious, collegial, kind, honest and academically inclined. We want to prepare pathologists not just to sign out cases but to lead, educate, advocate, discover, innovate and transform the field of pathology for our patients and their families. Our Fellowships Cytopathology The Cytopathology Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic cytology, including fine needle aspiration biopsy with surgical pathology and clinical correlation. Gastrointestinal Pathology The Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship provides intensive, focused, advanced training in all aspects of gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas and biliary tract disease, including transplant with opportunities for clinical research. Genitourinary Pathology The Genitourinary (GU) Pathology Fellowship provides extensive exposure and in-depth evaluation of non-neoplastic and neoplastic specimens from the kidney, urinary bladder, prostate and testis. Hematopathology The Hematopathology Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology. Neuropathology The Neuropathology Fellowship provides training in surgical and autopsy neuropathology, including pediatric neuropathology, forensic neuropathology and ophthalmic pathology. Selective Surgical Pathology The Selective Surgical Pathology Fellowship is designed to offer advanced, focused and intensive diagnostic training in all areas of surgical pathology. UCI School of Medicine & UCI Medical Center Founded in 1965, UCI is a top 10 public university according to U.S. News & World Report. It is home to several NIH-funded centers, including the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science. UCI boasts three Nobel laureates, despite being a relatively young university. UCI Health is the only academic medical center in Orange County, the nation’s sixth largest county and one of the most desirable locations to live in the United States. In support of its diverse citizenry, UCI is Orange County’s largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide. Living in Orange County, California Trainees generally live in Irvine and surrounding areas in Orange County, which are considered safe and family-friendly. Some of these cities are home to some of the best school districts in California, with a history of being ranked highly in national school ratings. The Douglas Hospital is 10 minutes from Angel Stadium (baseball) and the Honda Center (ice hockey) and 15 minutes from Disneyland. Professional American football and soccer are accessible in nearby Los Angeles. The famous Orange County beaches are popular for surfing, volleyball and relaxing. The excellent weather and numerous public parks, courts, golf courses and other facilities allow easy access to a range of outdoor sports. There are about 280 sunny days per year in Orange and Irvine, with mild winters. Weekend skiing is about 90 minutes away. Hiking trails in city, state and national parks abound in Orange County and Southern California. UCI has a boathouse in the Newport Back Bay where kayaks and water sports are available. The Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County and the Ahmanson Theatre and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles are a few of the performing arts venues in Southern California. There are many museums in Southern California, which also has a large, diverse population with a correspondingly amazing range of foods, restaurants and grocery stores.
