Emergency General Surgery Clinical Expertise Faculty Clinical Expertise Division of Emergency General Surgery, Department of Surgery Home About Campus & Community Resources Surgery: Divisions > Emergency General Surgery > Clinical Expertise Areas of Expertise The Division of Emergency General Surgery uses minimally invasive, robotic and open surgical techniques to treat a wide spectrum of conditions. This includes both common procedures such as appendectomy and cholecystectomy, as well as more complex interventions for necrotizing soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal (GI) perforations and complex hernia repairs. Emergency Surgery for Acute Abdominal Pain At UCI School of Medicine, our faculty frequently performs urgent appendectomies, often using a minimally invasive approach. In addition, we perform emergency surgical procedures for other conditions causing acute abdominal pain such as peritonitis from perforations, neoplasms, diverticulitis and small bowel obstructions. Emergency Surgery for Cholecystitis and Other Biliary Tract Conditions The EGS team carries out emergency cholecystectomy for cholecystitis using laparoscopy or robotic techniques as indicated. UCI surgeons have experience performing intraoperative common bile duct evaluations using traditional cholangiograms or indocyanine green fluorescence. Bowel Obstructions EGS faculty members manage acute bowel obstructions due to various causes, including adhesions, tumors, incarcerated hernias, neoplasms, volvuli and intussusceptions. Laparoscopic and robotic techniques are often employed in such cases. Bowel Perforations/Leaks and GI Hemorrhages Our faculty members are experienced in performing emergency surgery to treat perforations in the stomach, small bowel or colon, upper and lower GI hemorrhages, and complications such as anastomotic leaks. Infections and Abscesses At UCI School of Medicine, our EGS faculty members manage soft tissue infections that require emergency surgery, ranging from cellulitis and pressure ulcers to abscesses, including hepatic and retroperitoneal, necrotizing fasciitis and compartment syndrome. Emergency Hernia Management When hernias require emergency management, the EGS team is experienced using laparoscopic and robotic procedures to repair them when possible. EGS surgeons treat inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional, ventral or diaphragmatic hernias. We also perform revisional or redo hernia repairs. Emergency Stoma Surgery Our EGS surgical faculty manage early and late complications of upper or lower GI tract stomas, such as ischemia, stenosis and stoma retraction. In addition, we treat fistulas that require emergency surgery, whether upper GI, perianal or perirectal. Other Emergency Surgical Conditions Other conditions that our EGS faculty members treat include the acute manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, megacolon, hemorrhoids, anorectal stenosis and rectal prolapse. We may be called upon to place percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies, tracheostomies or ventriculoperitoneal shunts.
