The Advanced Neonatal Cardiac Intensive Care and Hemodynamics Fellowship offers a focused, high-acuity training environment designed to prepare future leaders in neonatal cardiac intensive care and hemodynamics. With access to specialized units, expert faculty and advanced technology, fellows gain the experience needed to care for the most complex neonatal patients — from prenatal consultation to post-operative recovery and beyond.

During their time in the new Neonatal Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), fellows provide hands-on care throughout the patient's hospital course. This includes:

  • Prenatal counseling for expecting mothers
  • Leading delivery room care and transition to ex-utero life
  • Managing pre-operative care and readiness for cardiac surgery
  • Participating in post-operative management in the CVICU

In addition to care in the CVICU, fellows support neonates with complex hemodynamic disease throughout CHOC's neonatal units. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing direct patient care and specialty consultations
  • Performing and interpreting targeted hemodynamic echocardiography
  • Developing and guiding individualized therapeutic plans
  • Leading the initiation and full course of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) when needed
