Fellows receive two months of protected time during their fellowship to complete a scholarly project of their choosing. Additionally, afternoons during time in the echocardiography lab early in the year may be available to support research activities. Fellows are encouraged to present their work at conferences, with strong support to complete a robust scholarly product by the end of the program.

To support these goals, prospective fellows are encouraged to develop potential research ideas before enrollment. Incoming fellows are expected to submit a research proposal, with faculty support, to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) IRB prior to the start of training in July. The primary research mentor does not need to be affiliated with UC Irvine or CHOC but must collaborate with one of our core faculty members to ensure IRB compliance.

Our faculty have a strong history of academic and research success, contributing extensively to neonatal cardiac intensive care and hemodynamics through numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbooks focused on pediatric and neonatal echocardiography. They actively participate in the International Neonatal Hemodynamics Research Center collaborative group, regularly facilitating and attending lectures with the broader neonatal hemodynamics community.

Many faculty members serve on focus groups within the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium (CHNC), and the Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Collaborative. The program is also a participating site for several randomized clinical trials, including the SMART PDA study and those led by the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Study Group.
