“I chose to come to UCI on account of its reputation for offering excellent clinical and procedural training. While UCI serves as an academic tertiary and quaternary care center (and the only academic center in Orange County), it also serves as an essential part of California’s health care safety net system, meaning that it cares for an incredibly diverse population of patients, which was also important to me as I sought out a fellowship program. You also can’t beat its location, in sunny Orange County (and for me, very close to my family), which our incredibly fair call schedule allows us to enjoy! I am so fortunate to have matched at UCI to complete my GI training, and enjoy every single day working with my incredible co-fellows and attending physicians.”

“I chose UCI GI because of the top-notch endoscopic training, amazing location, and incredible mentorship. But what really made the experience special is the group of fun, smart fellows who became some of my closest friends and colleagues. The camaraderie and mutual support we've shared have enriched my experience beyond what I could have imagined. Looking back, I can’t picture having gone through fellowship anywhere else! UCI is truly the perfect place to grow as a gastroenterologist and as a person.”

“As an applicant, I was drawn towards UC Irvine’s Gastroenterology fellowship due to the excellent clinical and endoscopic training, the family feel amongst fellows, supportive program leadership and faculty, and the ability to serve a diverse and underserved patient population, which I believed would prepare me well for any path within Gastroenterology. After having ranked UCI as my top choice and matching here, I can say that each aspect of what drew me to UCI has been true. Equally important, thanks to our balanced call schedule, I have been able to spend quality time with my family, as well as hangout with my co-fellows and their families. Some of my favorite moments from my first year thus far have been the multiple potlucks with fellows/families (including our own personal taco truck), laughing with co-fellows in the work room, and reaching the cecum.”

“It was always a dream of mine to come back to my own community to serve as a physician. UCI’s gastroenterology fellowship allowed me the opportunity to return to Long Beach and care for my community at the Long Beach VA, while also being able to work with underserved populations in Orange County. Many of the patients who I meet on the GI service are Spanish-speaking, and this population has a special place in my heart – I grew up in a Spanish monolingual household and I am the son of two Salvadorian refugees. The best part of fellowship has been my co-fellows – everyone is incredibly smart yet also knows how to have fun, so much so that work does not feel like a job!”
