“I chose UCI for its excellent endoscopic and clinical training. Having been a resident at UCI, I got to see firsthand the quality of gastroenterologists UCI trains and after a few years as a fellow, I am glad I chose UCI. UCI is the only academic center in Orange County and serves a diverse patient population. Being able to stay and serve my hometown has been a dream come true. But what made this experience truly special is our group of fun, smart fellows who became some of my closest friends. Everyday has reassured me that this is the place to be!”

“What I love most about being part of the UCI GI Fellowship are the people and the incredible clinical and endoscopic training we receive here. We have built a genuine sense of community where faculty are excited to teach, and fellows truly support and care about one another. My co-fellows are a big part of why I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day. We also get a great mix of bread-and-butter cases and complex cases with excellent learning opportunities. Having never lived in California before starting fellowship, I also love everything that comes with being in Southern California—the weather, the food, and having so much to explore outside of work. After having ranked UCI as my top choice and matching here, I can say that each aspect of what drew me to UCI has been true. Equally important, thanks to our balanced call schedule, I have been able to spend quality time with my family, as well as hangout with my co-fellows and their families. Some of my favorite moments from my first year thus far have been the multiple potlucks with fellows/families (including our own personal taco truck), laughing with co-fellows in the work room, and reaching the cecum.”

“It was always a dream of mine to come back to my own community to serve as a physician. UCI’s gastroenterology fellowship allowed me the opportunity to return to Long Beach and care for my community at the Long Beach VA, while also being able to work with underserved populations in Orange County. Many of the patients who I meet on the GI service are Spanish-speaking, and this population has a special place in my heart – I grew up in a Spanish monolingual household and I am the son of two Salvadorian refugees. The best part of fellowship has been my co-fellows – everyone is incredibly smart yet also knows how to have fun, so much so that work does not feel like a job!”
