Two graduates of the UCI School of Medicine Class of 2024, Dana Le, MD, (left) and Angelina Lo, MD, (right) worked together for the majority of their undergraduate medical education as part of Team KiPOW (Kid Power!) OC.

They are the outgoing board co-chairs and previous research co-chairs for this academic-community partnership that promotes health education and provides weekly mentorship to low-income elementary school students. Mentorship and service are foundational concepts to their contributions to Team KiPOW OC and their future aspirations.

“[As a Vietnamese American] growing up in Orange County with a significant population of Vietnamese residents, I have always been driven to serve and represent my community, particularly through medicine and community outreach,” says Le. “Serving the AANHPI community means representing my community as a healthcare provider and advocating for health equity for AANHPI individuals.”

Echoing this passion for health equity, Lo adds, “As a proud Chinese-Indonesian American and the daughter of immigrants, I know that the medical field can be intimidating or unapproachable for some people. […] During medical school, I’ve committed myself to researching disparities in healthcare, and participating in community interventions at schools that provide health education and care for underserved communities.”

In the future, Drs. Le and Lo will continue pursuing their passions for the health and well-being of young people. Dana Le will return to UCI as part of the UCI/CHOC pediatric residency program, and Angelina Lo will join the pediatric residency program at UC San Francisco.
