The Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community is a heterogeneous community whose collective health and well-being requires consideration of multiple factors including ethnicity, nationality, religion and socioeconomic status.

Margaret Chung, MD
These intersections are exemplified through the life and legacy of Margaret Chung, MD, the first American-born Chinese female physician.

Dana Le, MD & Angelina Lo, MD
Two graduates of the UCI School of Medicine Class of 2024, Dana Le, MD, and Angelina Lo, MD, worked together for the majority of their undergraduate medical education as part of Team KiPOW (Kid Power!) OC.

Afshan Hameed, MD
Afshan Hameed, MD, is a nationally recognized expert in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy and postpartum, whose work has specifically garnered attention toward the need to screen for cardiovascular risk during pregnancy and postpartum and to monitor patients who have previously unknown cardiovascular disease or are at risk of developing it.

Sunmin Lee, ScD
Sunmin Lee, ScD, is a social epidemiologist whose research has focused on reducing health disparities among Asian Americans over the last two decades. She is currently the principal investigator on three NIH-funded studies related to health disparities affecting Asian Americans.
The accomplishments of these individuals illustrate the intersectional nature of our school’s mission to Discover. Teach. Heal., as well as the deeply personal passions that shape our work for the better.
Our students, staff, faculty and the community at-large all bring diverse worldviews into our physical and intellectual space that allow us to see new perspectives and build upon one another’s strengths and passions for the betterment of all.
