Christine Gall, PhD, Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, has been appointed as the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Endowed Chair, effective July 1, 2024. The Aldrich Chair was established in 1984 to honor the contributions made to the campus by its founding chancellor. The chair recognizes an outstanding scholar and teacher of the highest distinction whose research has been widely and internationally acclaimed.

Gall is being recognized for her seminal contributions to the field of neuroscience. Her research has described the basic mechanisms used by the brain to encode new memories and studied how these processes are disturbed by diverse conditions and cognitive disorders. Her work includes the development of treatments and learning strategies to enhance brain function. Gall recently discovered that the encoding processes are profoundly different in males versus females, which may underlie differential vulnerability to conditions such as depression and Alzheimer's Disease.

A long-time Anteater, Gall earned a bachelor's degree and a Ph.D. in biological sciences at UC Irvine. She completed postdoctoral work at Stony Brook University before joining the UCI faculty in 1981. Among her many honors and affiliations, Gall is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a former officer of the Society for Neuroscience.
