Visit Our Curriculum page for an overview of your curriculum for the next four years. Medical Degree Program Curriculum Pre-Order Your Educational Technology Supplies Technology Overview for Incoming Students Greetings, incoming medical students! My name is Warren Wiechmann and I’m the Associate Dean for Clinical Science Education & Educational Technology and I wanted to share some information with you about your technology needs as a medical student. As many of you know, UC Irvine does not shy away from incorporating technology in its curriculum, from Simulation to iPads, to handheld ultrasound, and now even Virtual Reality! We’ll cover this more in orientation, but I wanted to put a few things on your radar… #1: You need an iPad… The School of Medicine will provide you with a $300 voucher through our Computer Store to help with this purchase. There are several models of the iPad that work with the Apple Pencil now — the handwriting capabilities are great and extremely useful for note-taking. Why the iPad? Our infrastructure at UC Irvine and at the hospital is geared toward iOS devices because of their security, and compatibility with some of the content and apps isn’t quite there with other tablets. If you have an Apple Store nearby, we recommend that you test out the different iPad models and the Apple Pencil. #2: Pre-order your iPad… We’ll provide more detailed instructions on how to actually pre-order your device. This will allow us to guarantee that it will be ready prior to Orientation. These purchases are managed through the UCI Bookstore since they’re able to take advantage of education pricing discounts. Also be aware that during the summer, Apple usually announces its “Back to School” deals - these change each year, but may allow you get something extra with your purchase. #3: Do I need a laptop? Not necessarily…this is a matter of personal preference and your study style. It is not uncommon for students to use a laptop and iPad combination when studying or taking notes. During the pandemic when there was a larger percentage of remote learning, we found that many students preferred having two devices - one for Zoom and one for note-taking. With this in mind may be worthwhile to review the laptop recommendations. #4: Secondary Electronic? Yes. We strongly recommend that students have two devices because of our experiences with remote learning. Additionally, certain exams may remain remotely proctored and a second device will be necessary for that. As above, this second device does NOT need to be a laptop - it can be a phone, additional tablet, or any device that can log into a Zoom session (which is the university's videoconferencing platform). #5: Who do I reach out to for questions? Feel free to send me an email at wiechmaw@hs.uci.edu. You can also reach out to Julie Youm, PhD, the Director of Educational Technology and Associate Dean at jyoum@hs.uci.edu. Any questions regarding orders should be sent directly to both the Tech Manager at The Hill (UCI Bookstore), Malia Parpana-Nielsen: mparpana@bncollege.com and Store Manager, Joanne Jimenez: jjimenez@bncollege.com. AAMC Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ) Beginning June 1, AAMC will send each accepted student a unique survey link via email to access the MSQ. The survey links will be sent from msq@aamc.org to the email address submitted by each student when filling out their AMCAS application. As additional individuals are accepted for admission, they will receive their links on a rolling basis, two weeks after the acceptances are reported to AMCAS. Students who have problems accessing the MSQ should contact MSQ staff directly at msq@aamc.org and include their full name and AAMC ID in their message. The leadership of the UCI School of Medicine would like to encourage you to complete this survey at your earliest convenience. The information you provide is extremely valuable to us in evaluating our program. Please also know that anything you answer or make comments about are summarized and not linked to a specific student’s survey answers.
