Emergency Medicine Residency Program About the Program Message from the Program Director Curriculum How to Apply Our Residents Residency Program Events Resident Life About the Program Home Education Department Programs Emergency Medicine: Residency Program Emergency Medicine: Residency Program > About The Program Comprehensive Training Our residents’ primary training site is UCI Medical Center, which is a Level I Trauma Center, comprehensive stroke center, burn center, cardiac receiving center, cancer center and Orange County base hospital. As the comprehensive tertiary care center for Orange County’s 3 million people, our medical center provides residents with a wide range of clinical experiences. Trauma Experience at UCI As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Orange County, our robust trauma experience is one of the strengths of the program. Training is designed to provide the full spectrum of trauma care, not just initial emergency department stabilization. Residents serve as an integral member of a dedicated trauma team, act as the first advanced trauma provider in the field and provide trauma care in the ED. They also provide trauma critical care in the surgical intensive care unit after initial stabilization. Clinical Rotation Sites To learn more about our primary training site, watch these virtual tours: Overview of UCI Medical Center, 360 UCI Medical Center with Dean Michael J. Stamos, 360 UCI Medical Trauma Center with Dr. Chris Fox and 360 UCI Medical Center & GME Overview with Deena McRae. In addition to UCI Medical Center, our residents rotate at Children’s Health of Orange County, Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Our Department The Department of Emergency Medicine is an autonomous unit, both within the hospital and UCI School of Medicine. We secured our own departmental status in 2002, the first of the five UC Health Sciences campuses to earn such independence. Our faculty members are actively involved with the hospital medical staff and in medical school affairs, as well as in professional associations, such as the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Emergency Medicine. Fellowship Opportunities Our department has a number of fellowships, up to and including: ACGME-credentialed: Clinical Informatics, Critical Care and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Non-ACGME: Administrative, Multimedia Design Education Technology (SAEM-approved), Education and Faculty Development, EMS, Medical Simulation, Ultrasound (EUFAC-accredited) and Wilderness Medicine (WMS-approved). These fellowships add to the rich academic environment available to our residents, affording them the opportunity in local, regional and national research and policy issues. One-on-One Apprenticeship Model Full-time faculty members are present 24 hours a day. Our residents are fortunate to have a nearly 1:1 faculty/resident ratio. During each shift, residents see a high volume of new, undifferentiated patients and present every patient to an emergency medicine faculty member, never to a fellow resident. As such, our residents get the highest level of teaching each patient case.
