About Us Our expert surgeons are fellowship-trained and actively involved in leadership at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. UCI colorectal surgeons have written over 100 research manuscripts on colon and rectal surgery and numerous national surgical guidelines for the treatment of colon and rectal diseases. The division was the first to perform robotic surgery for rectal cancer in Orange County and the first to offer complete minimally invasive colectomy. In close coordination with the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, it is recognized as a rectal cancer center of excellence. The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery was founded by Michael Stamos, MD, who is a past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and a past president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, which certifies physicians to practice in the field.
