The UCI Department of Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship in Population Health is designed to train junior faculty investigators in the field of emergency medicine research and population health. The goal of the fellowship is to assist academic-minded emergency physicians in becoming funded clinical research scientists.
The two-year fellowship focuses on advanced clinical research skills. The fellow will have protected time and educational funding to formally pursue an MPH or MS degree focusing on research methodology. In addition, the fellow will gain valuable administrative experience in functioning as a research director.
- Deliver two lectures per year to emergency medicine residents in the focus area.
- Participate in weekly research meetings with faculty mentor(s).
- Participate in the Emergency Medicine Undergraduate Research Associates Program (established in 1997), one of the most successful in the country.
- Participate in other departmental educational activities such as Journal Club, Grand Rounds, case conferences and resident/student teaching.
- Serve as a fellow section editor and a reviewer for the “Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health.”
- Provide formal mentorship to selected emergency medicine residents, medical students or visiting research scholars working on research projects.
- Provide clinical service to the department at a level determined by the departmental chair.
The fellow will function as a clinical instructor within the Department of Emergency Medicine. In this role, the fellow will serve as an attending physician and supervise residents and medical students during their clinical shifts.
Fellows will have dedicated time for their own formal research education through an established master’s-level pathway. Weekly meetings with mentors will help shape the fellow into an independent researcher.
Applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible emergency physicians. They must apply or have a California medical license.
The fellow is funded through the clinical hours they work, as this is a non-ACGME fellowship. A stipend toward tuition for the master’s degree is provided by the department. Additional research funding may also be available.
Full benefits, including medical and dental, will be provided by UCI during the fellowship. Four weeks of vacation are available during the fellowship.
