Our residency program focuses on developing compassionate, skilled physicians through core values like Scholarship and Inquiry, Service, Humanism, Personal and Professional Development, and Camaraderie. We strive to shape well-rounded healthcare professionals prepared to excel in their careers. We hope our program’s values align with yours and reflect what you envision in a training program.

Scholarship and Inquiry

At UCI Internal Medicine, we are proud to support our residents in advancing their knowledge and contributing to the medical community through engaging in scholarly work and research. Our residents regularly attend and present at prestigious conferences such as ACP, SGIM, AHA, CHEST, DDW, ASCO, etc., reflecting the high caliber of their research and the program's dedication to fostering academic excellence.

Service

Our commitment to service is deeply rooted in our dedication to providing compassionate care to Orange County's diverse patient population. Our residents care for patients from a wide range of racial, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds. Beyond clinical care, we actively volunteer with UCI-supported summer programs, mentoring high school and undergraduate students from underrepresented communities who aspire to careers in medicine, reinforcing our commitment to service both within the hospital and in the broader community.

Humanism

Humanism is at the heart of our approach to patient care. Our residents work closely with patients, ensuring that every interaction is rooted in empathy and understanding. We are deeply committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and awareness, reinforced through implicit bias and bystander training. This dedication helps our residents develop into well-rounded, compassionate and effective physicians who are not only skilled in medicine but also in the human connection that is essential to healing.

Personal and Professional Development

Personal and professional development is a cornerstone of our residency program. All residents actively participate in the Student Teachers and Resident Scholars (STARS) pathway, where they learn the art of teaching and mentoring. They also engage in senior-intern mentorship, providing guidance to junior colleagues, and benefit from one-on-one mentorship with continuity clinic mentors.

Camaraderie

At UCI Internal Medicine, resident camaraderie is one of our greatest strengths. During residency, we spend so much time together—often more than with our own families—that we naturally become a second family. Beyond the hospital, we make time to relax and enjoy all that Southern California has to offer, building close-knit bonds that support our personal and professional growth.
