DESCRIPTION

Provides an opportunity for medical students to participate in research programs of the Department of Anesthesiology. Individual faculty members will sponsor and supervise research projects jointly developed by the individual student and a faculty member. Credit and duration of each project will be variable, based upon the amount of time the student devotes to the project.  

PREREQUISITES

Permission of PI instructor and approval of the Associate Dean of Clinical Education.

RESTRICTIONS

Associate Dean of Clinical Education approval must be obtained prior to beginning research project. Student must submit a UCI School of Medicine Student research, international and independent student application.

Peter Breen, MD, has worked in higher education and is the course director for the 699Q course. 

Elizabeth Chan is the course coordinator for the 699Q course.

Scheduling Coordinator: To enroll in the course, complete the research application, then email comsched@hs.uci.edu to make a scheduling appointment.

Students must submit a UCI School of Medicine Student Research, International and Independent Study Application DocuSign. 

Periods Available: The time of the course must be pre-approved by the elective director at least three months prior to the start of the course. No exceptions.

Complete Research Elective Proposal and submit the document to Associate Dean of Clinical Education for approval.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS

Students will participate in research activities under the supervision of departmental faculty. 

GRADING

Medical Students are graded using the following scale: Honors (H), Pass (P), Fail (F), and Incomplete (I). For further information, please review the Grading Policy.  

 You have 30 days from the date of the grade to appeal any aspect of this grade.  Please contact your Clerkship/course Director should you have any questions. 

Requirements for “Pass” 

To receive a grade of Pass, students must demonstrate successful performance in all the following areas:

Requirements for “Honors”

Grounds for “Incomplete”

You will not be issued a grade until all elements of the course have been completed.

REMEDIATION

Remediation, if needed, will be designed by the Course Director to suit the issue at hand. 

Grounds for “Fail”: You will receive a grade of "Fail" if the requirements for passing the course have not been met. Please refer to the Grading Policy for the impact of the "Fail" grade to the transcript.
