DESCRIPTION

Students will spend the majority of their time with microscopic examinations. The student will have the opportunity to review selected study sets available in the Dermatopathology Laboratory. They will participate, to a limited extent, in actual case sign-outs and will help the dermatology resident gross tissue specimens for subsequent microscopic examination. Weekly conferences to be attended include basic science teaching conferences and dermatology grand rounds. Monthly conferences that are optional include multispecialty skin tumor board. Some time will also be available for reading or optional attendance at a morning dermatology clinic. Writing a brief case report for publication is encouraged.  

PREREQUISITES

620B Dermatology elective. This course is intended for fourth-year students enrolled in the undergraduate medical education program at UCI School of Medicine.

This course is intended for third and fourth-year students enrolled in the undergraduate medical education program at UCI School of Medicine.  

COURSE DIRECTOR

Dr. Linda Doan is board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and has a PhD in developmental biology. She is active in research with multiple collaborations between clinicians of different specialties and basic scientists. She is an invited editor for dermatology textbooks and is an invited lecturer at board review courses. She is currently an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Dermatology and an assistant clinical professor of pathology at UCI and serves as the director of the UCI Health Dermatopathology Laboratory. 

Terena Wells is the course coordinator for the 620C course. Terena comes to you with 20 years in the medical field, 13 of which she has worked in dermatology. She has a passion for dermatology and is fascinated with the field.

Periods Available: The time of the course must be pre-approved by the elective director at least three months prior to the start of the course. No exceptions.

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD DO TO PREPARE FOR THE COURSE

Read as much dermatology as possible. Obtain a dermatopathology primer; several are available and at the student level: Essential Skin Pathology by Phillip McKee. Primer of Dermatopathology, 3rd Edition by Hood, Kwan, et. al.

GRADING

Medical Students are graded using the following scale: Honors (H), Pass (P), Fail (F), and Incomplete (I). For further information, please review the Grading Policy.  

You have 30 days from the date of the grade to appeal any aspect of this grade.  Please contact your clerkship/course director should you have any questions. 

The student will receive an Honors, Pass or Fail for this course. The standardized UCI elective evaluation form will be used to determine the student’s final grade. Evaluations will be made by the director of the Dermatopathology Laboratory and the resident(s) assigned to the service. The evaluation will include dependability, enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, learning capability, creativeness and overall performance 

Requirements for “Pass” 

To receive a grade of Pass, students must demonstrate successful performance in all of the following areas:
