During Women's History Month, we want to celebrate the work of those at the UCI School of Medicine who are working to rewrite a better history in the name of a greater good. First, we commend Maria Victoria Peralta, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care. Dr. Peralta’s research interests include LGBTQ+ health and women’s health.

As an expert in these fields, she has been praised for her exemplary mentorship in the areas of research and clinical care related to female and LGBTQIA+ populations. Beyond her academic endeavors, residents and medical students have also specifically noted that Dr. Peralta consistently leads by example by demonstrating a firm understanding of the intersectionality of people’s identities, a keen awareness of her presence and impact in other people’s lives and strong social advocacy for patients.

Dr. Peralta has been described by students and colleagues as a great mentor who has deepened their admiration for the medical field. Dr. Peralta has also worked to bring attention to racial and gender inequities in healthcare access and STEM education by demonstrating her holistic, intersectional approach to professional development and medical training. These sentiments are a true testament to the value of academic medicine and the spirit of Women’s History Month to honor accomplishments that are both recorded and unrecorded.
