Cooper, MD, professor of pediatrics at the UCI School of Medicine, associate vice chancellor of clinical and translational research, and founding director of the Institute for Clinical Translational Science, has been awarded the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Distinguished University Service Award. Named in honor of Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr., the founding chancellor of UCI from 1962-1984, the award is among the most prestigious awards University of California faculty members can receive from their colleagues Conferred by the UCI Senate, this award recognizes faculty who, in addition to achieving distinction in scholarly pursuits, have made sustained and outstanding contributions through service to UCI. Since joining UCI in 1997, Dr. Cooper has focused his research efforts on how exercise and physical activity can be used to benefit children with chronic conditions like asthma, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, obesity, heart disease and metabolic syndromes like diabetes. He has taken particular interest in new therapies involving both pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions. Dr. Cooper received his medical degree from UC – San Francisco and completed his pediatric residency at New York University Bellevue Medical Center. He also completed postdoctoral fellowship training in pediatric pulmonology at Babies Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.
