Dr. Phyllis Agran receives 2024 OC Medical Association Physician of the Year Award Posted: 2024-05-13 Source: UCI School of Medicine News Type: Features & Briefs share Phyllis Agran, MD, MPH, professor emeritus in the UC Irvine School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and Department of Emergency Medicine was selected as the Orange County Medical Association 2024 Physician of the Year. Dr. Agran, a clinician, professor and mentor has practiced in the Orange County community for more than 40 years. Her research as a member of the UCI Center for Trauma and Injury Prevention Research led to the passage of California’s first-child passenger safety law in 1982. Her continued research and advocacy have contributed to state legislation to eliminate occupant travel in the cargo area of pickup trucks, seat belts on school buses, safer pedestrian and bicycle policies, and now the establishment of a California Drowning Data Collection Program (SB 855). Working with faculty in UCI’s Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing, Dr. Agran expanded her research to focus on school nurses and related health services that improve student health and academic outcomes. Dr. Agran emphasizes that we, as physicians, are in a unique position to act locally, nationally, and globally to improve the health and well-being of people everywhere.
