Theme

This year’s theme is Navigate. Pieces will be selected by the Plexus medical student board based on originality, impact, and execution, with preference given to submissions that adhere to the theme. Submissions from medical students will be automatically entered into the Plexus Medical Student Competition, where winners will be featured and honored at our Plexus launch event in Spring 2024. Submissions must be received by the deadline to be considered for the competition. Please adhere to the following instructions.

Submission Instructions

  1. Submit one form per piece. We welcome multiple submissions.
  2. Upload each piece as an individual file.
  3. File size must not exceed 100MB.
  4. File names should not include spaces or underscores (i.e. a piece named “Girl with a Pearl Earring” should be submitted with the file name, “GirlWithAPearlEarring”)
  5. Do not include your name on the submitted work. This allows us to keep judging confidential.
  6. Follow HIPAA regulations.

Once accepted, selected visual and written work will be published online and in print in Spring 2024. Musical and performance works will be featured on our website.

Submitting your piece(s) gives Plexus permission to copy, print, and distribute any selected art for UCI-related purposes. Each copy will credit the artist and will not be altered without their consent.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email uciplexusjournal@gmail.com.

Deadline

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 21, 2024.

Medium-Specific Guidelines

Writing & Literary Art

We accept poetry, short stories, essays, and other creative and nonfiction submissions with a suggested word limit of 1000 words. Pieces exceeding this limit will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may require revision.

Still Visual Art

This category includes but is not limited to photography, painting, and drawing. Only .tif, .jpeg and .png files will be accepted. Please use high-resolution images (at least 150 ppi) to ensure that the submission is fairly represented. The largest dimension of the image should be at least 1000 pixels. If you do not have access to a high-resolution camera or scanner, please contact uciplexusjournal@gmail.com to arrange for a photograph to be taken of your artwork.

Performing Art & Multimedia

We accept submissions from actors, filmmakers, dancers, singers, instrument players, musicians, comedians, storytellers, and performers of any kind. Only .mp3, .mp4, or .avi files will be accepted. Submissions must be less than five minutes in duration.
