Dr. Abraham J. Qavi is a distinguished physician-scientist and academic leader specializing in pathology and innovative laboratory diagnostics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He serves as an Assistant Professor in Residence in both the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Chemistry. His clinical roles include Director of Innovative Laboratory Diagnostics, Director of Point of Care Testing, and serving as Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry. His research focuses on developing innovative diagnostic platforms and implementing disruptive technologies in clinical settings. Dr. Qavi's expertise spans diagnostics, photonics and plasmonics, neglected tropical diseases, host-pathogen response, and immunology. His contributions have been recognized through multiple awards, including the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award (2017-2018) and the Leadership in Entrepreneurial Acceleration Program (LEAP) Grant (2017-2019).

 

As a K Scholar, Dr. Qavi brings valuable insights to early-career physician-scientists, drawing from his experience transitioning from Washington University to UCI and securing NIH Career Development funding. He actively mentors researchers on balancing clinical duties with research pursuits and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. His approach to career development emphasizes strategic planning in laboratory setup and the importance of targeted training opportunities in shaping a successful physician-scientist trajectory. Dr. Qavi's multidisciplinary background and expertise make him a valuable asset to UCI Health and the broader medical research community, contributing significantly to pathology, laboratory medicine, and diagnostic innovation.
