Research Opportunities

The UCI School of Medicine is supportive of student research efforts and provides various funding opportunities for students to engage in research throughout the academic year. In addition, the Office of Student Support maintains a current repository of various opportunities offered within and outside of the institution.

The UCI School of Medicine offers many exciting opportunities for medical students to participate in basic science and clinical research. All medical students who are motivated to pursue research interests are encouraged to do so. The Office of Student Support offers competitive sources for stipends for students who wish to participate in research projects with special attention paid to opportunities which allow for up to two months of full-time research during the two-month vacation break between the first and second year.

The UCI School of Medicine Dean’s Office Summer Research Fellowship Program provides stipends for students to participate in research at UCI. Lists of available faculty sponsors and their research interests are provided to aid students in their search for a sponsor. Students submit a brief (maximum two pages) research proposal to apply for Dean’s Office funding and faculty committees review the proposals and make recommendations regarding funding to the Associate Dean for Students. A list of external funding sources of support for student research is also made available and staff assistance is provided to students interested in applying for funding. Please contact the Office of Student Support for more information.

In addition, annual funding is available to students who wish to attend and/or present at regional or national conferences. The UCI School of Medicine maintains a repository of research opportunities via the Student Affairs blog. The blog is updated regularly with opportunities within and outside of the institution.

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) has two NIH-funded (T-35) research training programs to support projects focused on basic, clinical and translational science. These summer programs provide a dedicated weekly stipend for up to 12 weeks of consecutive full-time research between the months of May and August, and funds for research expenses (lab materials, statistical support, etc.). Grant funding is available for research projects related to the following areas:

The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

NIDDK supports research projects related to diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases, liver and other digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, obesity, kidney and urologic diseases and hematologic diseases. More information on supported research projects and their mission can be found on the NIDDK website.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Research projects related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), aging, and the health and well-being of older people are supported. Projects focusing on ADRD will be prioritized. More information on supported research projects and their mission can be found on the NIA website.

This opportunity supports first-year medical students completing 8-12 weeks of full-time research during the summer between MS1 and MS2. MSTP students beyond MS1 who have 8-12 weeks of consecutive dedicated summer research time are also eligible to apply.
