Ursula Worsham, Assistant Dean, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

As the Diversity Officer of the UCI School of Medicine, I am grateful to extend a warm welcome to our community. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is foundational to our mission of “Discover. Teach. Heal.”

At the UCI School of Medicine, we believe that a diverse and inclusive environment enhances our academic excellence and fosters innovation in healthcare. Our community is enriched by individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, identities and lived experiences, and our goal is to ensure that every voice is heard and valued.

Belonging, equity and empowerment are three essential principles that create a supportive and just environment, particularly in diverse settings like academic medicine. Together, these interconnected concepts foster a culture that promotes fairness, inclusion and personal growth.

  • Belonging helps individuals feel safe and valued in this community.
  • Equity ensures that everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.
  • Empowerment enables individuals to take control of their growth, participate fully and contribute to shaping the future of healthcare.

In academic medicine, these principles are essential for building diverse, inclusive and high-performing teams that are capable of advancing knowledge, improving patient care and addressing the most pressing challenges in healthcare. By cultivating a sense of belonging, promoting equity and empowering individuals, we create environments where people can reach their fullest potential and drive meaningful change.

This website serves as a resource for you to engage with our initiatives, access training and support opportunities and learn about our ongoing efforts towards inclusive excellence in medicine. We aim to provide a space where everyone — medical students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff — can thrive and feel a sense of belonging.

We recognize that the journey towards true equity is ongoing. It requires our collective effort, commitment and courage to challenge the status quo and advocate for change. I invite you to actively participate in our programs, share your insights, and collaborate with us as we work towards a more inclusive future and healthier outcomes for all.

Thank you for being part of our community and for your commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in medicine. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on our institution and the communities we serve.

With gratitude,

Ursula Worsham, EdD
