The 48-month training program incorporates the American Board of Pathology (APB) required minimum of 18 months of anatomic pathology (AP) and 18 months of clinical pathology (CP) with rotations at four affiliated institutions: UCI Medical Center VA Medical Center in Long Beach (LBVA) Children’s Health of Orange County (CHOC) Orange County Sheriff’s Department Anatomic Pathology (AP)/Clinical Pathology (CP) Curriculum In addition to the AP/CP curriculum below, four months of electives in AP, CP or research are needed to complete 48 months of combined AP/CP training. Alternatively, an AP-only curriculum is available, which consists of 25 months of core AP rotations plus 11 months of AP and/or CP electives, which may include up to three months of research. This curriculum is best suited for individuals interested in academic or forensic pathology careers. Completing this curriculum will allow the resident to take the Anatomic Pathology only (AP) Board exams. AP Curriculum The AP curriculum consists of 25 months of core rotations, including: One month of PGY-1 bootcamp 16 to 18 months of surgical pathology with incorporated autopsy Three months of cytopathology One month of neuropathology One month of dermatopathology One month of forensic pathology at the Coroner’s Office, Orange County Sheriff's Department In addition to the core AP curriculum above, residents will also spend a duration of time in Autopsy Services. Residents must complete 30 autopsy cases in order to be board-eligible. CP Curriculum The CP curriculum consists of 19 months of core rotations, including: Four to five months of hematopathology Four to five months of blood banking/transfusion medicine Four to five months of chemistry, including laboratory management and informatics Three months of microbiology One month of cytogenetics One month of molecular diagnostics Research For applicants with an MD/PhD or other strong research background, we offer a three- or six-month elective research rotation with opportunities for research in the laboratories of our research faculty. Research interests of the faculty are diverse, and more information is available on the faculty web page. Faculty Research Areas Sample PGY-1 Schedule The residency training program emphasizes early exposure to anatomic pathology. The second year is intended to be flexible and can be tailored to accommodate special career interests to help residents prepare to apply to fellowships in their third year. First-year residents will spend one month in PGY-1 bootcamp, six months at UCI and the LBVA in surgical pathology and autopsy, two to three months on other core AP rotations and two to three months on core CP rotations.
