The family medicine faculty are all involved with the residents in some capacity, and our residents have taken advantage of the depth and breadth of their experience in research and publications, international health, community outreach, behavioral health, and special electives in diverse areas such as complementary medicine and leadership/public health policy. Residents are privileged to work in a state-of-the-art community health center in central Santa Ana. As the busiest Federally Qualified Health Center in Orange County, the UCI Family Health Center — Santa Ana allows residents to serve patients who are truly in need and who value a family doctor's role in their lives, in a setting that rivals many private clinics. Range of Clinical Training Settings Our residents benefit from a rich learning environment at the UCI Family Health Center, which offers a diverse patient base with a broad range of clinical needs. See Where We Train The Heart of the Program The residents themselves are UCI’s greatest asset. We have a great group of physicians who come from diverse backgrounds but enjoy working and playing together. They are committed to making the program better and work closely with the residency leadership. Together we’ve made some remarkable improvements to the curriculum and the residency experience in general. Tailored Education: Empowering Our Residents We prepare our residents to become well-rounded, excellent family physicians who will care for patients across their lifespan. We also provide innovative programs to enable our residents to develop specialized skills such as the following: Program in Medical Education for Latino Communities (PRIME-LC) Track This track is dedicated to training physicians to serve Latinx communities as physician leaders and/or academic faculty. It is the first track of its kind in the country that aims for advocacy, diversity, inclusion, health equity and social justice. Sports Medicine Track This track was developed to offer education, training and exposure to primary care sports medicine, with a particular emphasis on ultrasound-guided procedures. It's ideal for those considering a primary care sports medicine fellowship or a future primary care practice that involves significant community sports and event coverage. Obstetric & Reproductive Care Our program is one of only about three dozen Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine programs in the country and values comprehensive reproductive health training. We are growing our family medicine/obstetrics service and have family medicine faculty who practice and teach low-risk obstetrics. Health Equity Across the Lifecourse (HEAL) In conjunction with the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics, the Department of Family Medicine sponsors HEAL seminars quarterly that emphasize health inequities. Advocacy skills are developed during training with opportunities available throughout the year.
