The Department of Biological Chemistry is a research focused department within the UCI School of Medicine

Our diverse and passionate community of scientists actively pursues a wide range of research interests that includes cancer, epigenetics and metabolism, stem cells and more. They play a crucial role in in the campus-wide research enterprise.

Faculty from our department lead several UC Irvine research focus areas as directors of the Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism, the UCI Genomics Research and Technology (GRT) Hub, and the Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We foster innovation at the lab bench and beyond. Our goal is to nurture a spirit of curiosity and discovery by stimulating interactions among faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, medical students, post-doctoral fellows and trainees.

We invite you to explore our website and learn more about our innovative research programs and biomedical teaching mission.

If you are interested in learning more about our leading-edge research or would like to tour a laboratory, please contact Barbara Shainberg. Our internationally recognized faculty members will be happy to discuss their research and answer your questions. You can also follow us on Facebook.

To foster more collaborative research the department has two divisions:

Molecular Biomedicine Division

Led by: Xing Dai, PhD

Research in the Molecular Biomedicine Division of the department spans a broad spectrum utilizing diverse model systems ranging from yeast to mammalian cell culture, animal models and patient samples. Our primary objective is to delve into the fundamental molecular, biochemical, and tissue microenvironmental mechanisms that contribute to nutrient utilization, tissue development, tissue repair, and the onset and development of various diseases including cancer. Additionally, we aim to pioneer novel therapeutic approaches targeting a variety of diseases including cancer and inflammatory conditions.

Computational Biomedicine Division

Led by: Wei Li, PhD

Computational Biomedicine leverages bioinformatics and big data to drive scientific discoveries in biomedical research. This division focuses on the integration of computational methods, statistical modeling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, electronic health records, and large-scale data analysis to unravel the complexities of human biology and disease mechanisms. Through our interdisciplinary approaches, we aim to accelerate the development of personalized medicine, improve diagnostic techniques, and identify novel targets for therapy.
