To help all our students be successful, UCI is committed to identifying students experiencing academic difficulties at an early stage and providing holistic interventions. We use an integrated, systematic and student-centered Continuum of Academic and Behavioral Support (CABS) model that offers support at different tiers. The support ranges from adequate instruction for all students, to targeted small-group interventions and individualized support. Tier 4 (Exit Support & Compassionate Off-Ramp) Individualized counseling Exit interview Tier 3 (Warning/Remediation): Tertiary Interventions Individual students Intensive 1-on-1 support Tier 2 (Attention/Concern): Secondary Interventions Some students Targeted group support Tier 1 (Proficient): Universal Interventions All students Preventative, proactive *Percentages in figure indicate anticipated percentage of the student body which may require support in each tier Tier 1 - Universal Interventions (available to all students) Access to Collaborative Learning Communities with Medical Students as Teachers (CLC-MSAT) services Tier 2 - Remediation All services in Tier 1 in addition to: Small group tutoring 1:1 coaching sessions with a Learning Specialist Students identified for Tier 2A support are those who: In any course, at any point, are receiving a grade below the minimum passing score Consistent performance (>2 examinations in one course or >4 examinations in all courses) within 5% of the pass mark Poor performance <10th percentile nationally on a comprehensive assessment (CBSE) Student will receive a Letter of Support from the Chair of the Student Success Team, who serves as the point of contact and works with the other members to develop an intervention plan for the student Student moves to Tier 2B if unresponsive to communication, continues to exhibit performance of concern, and/or other factors at the discretion of the Student Success Team Tier 3 - Intensive Interventions All services in Tiers 1 and 2 in addition to: 1:1 tutoring 1:1 coaching sessions with a Learning Specialist Students identified for Tier 3 support are those who: Exhibit consistent pattern of underperformance for more than 4 months Placed on an academic remediation plan by the Promotions and Honors Committee Placed on administrative leave or extended curriculum due to academic performance Failure of any course or clerkship Student receives a letter from the Associate Dean for Students, who will meet with the student to provide general support and discussion of next steps Student is required to meet with the Learning Skills Specialist Student takes full responsibility for constructing their remediation plan Tier 4 - Exit Support For some students, changing track to the Master of Science in Medical Science may be a better option. Although exit support can take place at any point along the continuum, students who may need to pursue another path are typically identified at the end of the first year. Exit support includes personal counseling, exit interviews and assistance with providing realistic alternatives.
