Our surgical pathology faculty plays a vital role in the education of medical students, residents and fellows, as well as in the clinical care of patients at UCI Medical Center. Involving the gross and microscopic examination of surgical specimens, cytology and biopsies submitted by surgical specialties, internal medicine, dermatology, neurology, radiology and medical oncology, surgical pathology is the basis for diagnosis either intraoperatively or following surgery. 

Our faculty has expertise in the following areas:

  • Consultations on problematic and unusual cases
  • Preoperative review before major surgery
  • Frozen section diagnosis
  • Rapid diagnosis of biopsy specimens
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Molecular studies for malignancies, breast cancer
  • Electron microscopy
  • Tumor grade and staging
  • Fine-needle aspiration (on-site evaluation)

Educational opportunities for the Surgical Pathology subspecialty include multidisciplinary conferences, residency training and a surgical pathology fellowship.
