UCI Medical Center
Our primary teaching site is UCI Medical Center, the largest construction project in Orange County. The medical center is located on a 33-acre site in the City of Orange, Calif. It is the only university medical center in Orange County, serving a population of over 3 million people. With more than 450 specialty and primary care physicians, the medical center offers the full scope of acute and general care services, including the latest in robotic surgical techniques, the most advanced surgical suites and specialized cardiac care operating rooms, and a new diagnostic radiology suite with leading-edge imaging facilities at UCI Douglas Hospital.

- 482,428 square feet
- Seven stories (plus basement)
- 422 beds, including 107 beds in University Hospital Tower and 81 beds in the Neuropsychiatric Center (67 neuropsychiatry and 14 acute rehabilitation beds)
- 45-bed neonatal intensive care unit
- State-of-the-art burn unit with eight beds
- 15 high-tech operating rooms that are 50% larger than those in the former hospital
- Two dedicated cardiac catheterization suites
- Conference rooms and collaborative workspaces for residents on each patient care floor
UCI Medical Center is designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Trauma Center and the American Burn Association as a Verified Burn Center. This translates into exceptional opportunities for our residents, fellows and medical students to learn about and care for critically ill surgical patients.
The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCI Medical Center is designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. This allows for a higher level of education because patients with a wide array of complex surgical problems are often referred to UCI surgeons.
Rotations also take place at affiliated veterans’, community and children’s hospitals, providing exposure to different types of patients and surgical problems, which is imperative to a well-balanced surgical education.
Rounding out this extraordinary clinical experience is the surgical simulation and skills training program. UCI Medical Center is home to one of the first American College of Surgeons Level I Accredited Education Institutes. This state-of-the-art simulation center, designed to promote patient safety by facilitating training in both common and advanced surgical procedures, allows practice and assessment of technical skills and procedures outside of the operating room. CME-accredited courses in minimally invasive general and colorectal surgery are offered for residents, faculty and community surgeons.
