The Department of Surgery actively collaborates with the Beckman Laser Institute and UC Irvine’s main campus, which has been ranked ninth among the nation’s public universities — and 33rd overall — in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 list of “Best Colleges.”

Department of Surgery researchers have access to UC Irvine-wide core facilities, centers, institutes, and research infrastructure to conduct clinical and translational research. They are also supported with a basic science research workspace and dedicated statistical biostatistician support via the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS).

Researchers also have access to national surgical databases (e.g., NSQIP, TQIP, VSQIP, NIS, etc.) to facilitate high-quality health services research, as well as collaborative biostatisticians and major undergraduate university resources. In addition, we have a strong record securing extramural funding (e.g., NIH, DOD, etc.) with support systems layered into our institution to help young investigators win career-shaping funding (e.g., K or other equivalent awards).
