Endocrinology Research Clinical Expertise Fellowship Faculty Fellowship Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine Home Research Research: Clinical Departments Medicine: Home Medicine: Divisions Medicine: Endocrinology Medicine: Endocrinology > Fellowship Program Overview Welcome to the UCI School of Medicine Endocrinology Fellowship, a two-year, ACGME-accredited program that offers clinical training in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. The program consists of four fellows who rotate at both the UCI and VA Long Beach campuses, giving a broad range of clinical experiences and exposure to a diverse patient population. Fellows gain extensive inpatient and outpatient experiences from knowledgeable faculty who are dedicated educators and clinicians. Training Sites UCI Douglas Hospital, part of UCI Medical Center in Orange, California (which has been on U.S. New & World Reports’ annual “America’s Best Hospitals” list since 2001), opened in 2009 and provides tertiary and quaternary care with over 19,000 inpatient admissions per year. VA Long Beach hospital is a 237-bed facility located in Long Beach, Calif., which provides care to more than 50,000 veterans. Faculty During their rotations, fellows interact with not only faculty from the Division of Endocrinology at UCI Douglas Hospital and the VA Long Beach, but also many area physicians who are active in community practice and organizations. This interaction gives fellows an exposure to a range of different practice experiences. Clinical Activities Fellows are exposed to a wide range of clinical settings and experiences in one-month block rotations at each training site, incorporating inpatient and outpatient experiences simultaneously. Rotations include an ambulatory rotation, a research rotation, a UCI inpatient rotation and a VA inpatient rotation. In addition to weekly continuity endocrine and diabetes clinics, the program offers the following clinical experiences: Thyroid biopsy clinic at VA Long Beach Insulin pump and CGM clinic at VA Long Beach Pediatric endocrinology at Children’s Hospital of Orange County Gender diversity clinic at UCI UCI Plaza clinic (outpatient community clinic) Senior fellows attend Endocrine University (one-week conference at the Mayo Clinic) Didactic Activities Fellows attend several didactic experiences, including: Wednesday morning weekly didactics Monthly endocrinology Grand Rounds Monthly Journal Club at the VA Monthly case conference at UCI Monthly endocrinology didactic series given by faculty Quarterly thyroid Tumor Board Quarterly pituitary Tumor Board Internal medicine Grand Rounds (optional) Fellowship Application Process and Eligibility The fellowship employs four fellows annually, consisting of two new hires and two continuing fellows per year. To be eligible, applicants must have: Completed a U.S. residency in internal medicine. Board-certification or board-eligibility in internal medicine. Proof of medical school graduation (original diploma). Proof of passing the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE). A California medical license prior to beginning fellowship.
