Our educational programs are designed to introduce students to the principles of acute care medicine through the lens of our emergency room. Emergency Medicine Clerkship Our core clerkship, Med Ed 547, is designed to introduce students to principles of acute care medicine in our hospital’s emergency room. Students have the opportunity to evaluate patients and formulate effective testing and treatment strategies. Active participation in patient care and procedural skills are emphasized. The clerkship also focuses on social determinants of health and how they impact the healthcare system and patients. The course consists of experiences in direct patient care, independent study, gamified educational activities, weekly didactic conferences and simulation sessions. Emergency Medicine Electives 627A Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Elective Students are required to complete enough shifts to perform a minimum of 75 ultrasounds per week on ED patients. View Elective 630D Advanced Emergency Medicine Elective The goal of the 630D clerkship is to introduce students to principles of acute care medicine. View Elective 699L Emergency Medicine Research Elective Provides an opportunity for medical students to participate in the research program in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Visiting Student Scholarship The UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Department is pleased to offer Visiting Student Scholarships for external students accepted to our 630D Advanced Emergency Medicine subinternship. We offer $1000 scholarships to two visiting medical students for reimbursements of travel-related costs associated with attending the elective. Through the application, students should demonstrate how their background and experience help them to provide the best care possible for our patients. Scholarship Application Process Applications open in June, and students who apply via VSLO for the Advanced Emergency Medicine 630D elective will receive an email with information on when and where to submit their scholarship application. Who Should Apply All students accepted to the subinternship are encouraged to apply Rising 4th-year medical student in good standing at an LCME or COCA-accredited medical school. Demonstrates experience and commitment to inclusion that advances quality patient care. Strong consideration will be given to applicants who have experiences that help them to better understand the medical needs, cultures, and perspectives of our patients.
