The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine is the only academic department in the nation that publishes a full-fledged scientific journal in emergency medicine.
Originally started as the California Journal of EM in 2000, Editor-in-Chief Mark Langdorf, MD, and Managing Associate Editor Shahram Lotfipour, MD, revamped the journal in 2007 to focus on population health, public policy and advocacy, and systems of medical care.
Now known as the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health (WestJEM), it is one of only two fully open-access, Medline-indexed emergency medicine journals in the world. More than 60 academic emergency medicine departments sponsor the journal, and it serves as the official journal of:
- The California chapters of AAEM and ACEP
- The American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians
Medical Education & JETem
The Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to being at the forefront of medical education. Our monthly conferences incorporate active learning principles to ensure engaging and effective didactics.
The department also publishes the Journal of Education & Teaching in Emergency Medicine (JETem)—an online, open-access, peer-reviewed journal for emergency medicine educators. JETem accepts and publishes:
- Ready-to-use didactics
- Team-based and small-group learning
- Simulations, podcasts, lectures, and curricula
- Image bank submissions
By providing a platform for educators to publish and distribute their work, JETem advances the scholarship of emergency medicine education.
