Our internationally recognized faculty are experts in population-based health, education and administration research. Our goal is to engage in translational research that brings discoveries from the bedside to the broader population. Our emergency department serves a diverse patient population with a variety of pathologies. This gives us a natural pool of patients to explore numerous research questions. As a result, we are simultaneously involved in many federal and foundation grants, as well as industry-sponsored trials. During the past five years, the department has published approximately 400 peer-reviewed articles. As one of the prominent nationally funded institutions for clinical and translational science, we have the departmental and university resources to enable our faculty to thrive in their research pursuits. Research Director's Message The UC Irvine School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine conducts innovative research to prevent injury and disease. Emergency departments are the front door to all that ails our society, and they sit at the crossroads for almost all other medical specialties. It is only natural that we as emergency medicine specialists are the shepherds of that discovery process. Our faculty members have a multitude of research interests, including: Alcohol and substance abuse Health policy Ultrasound Education Emergency medical services Disaster services Administrative research We are a collaborative team eager to strengthen our translational research presence with other medical specialties and other branches of science. The department is an active site for several research consortium groups. We also have research staff dedicated to supporting our enterprise and a well-established emergency medicine research associates program, which helps collect data for our studies. If you are interested in learning more about our research endeavors, please do not hesitate to contact us directly. We look forward to working with the greater scientific community to add to the breadth of emergency medicine research. Regards, Bharath Chakravarthy, MD, MPH Research Director, Department of Emergency Medicine Research Journals The Department of Emergency Medicine helps lead the field by publishing two peer-reviewed, open-access journals. These platforms share clinical research, education innovations and public health studies, reflecting our commitment to advancing emergency care through scholarship. Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine (CPC-EM) The online journal Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine (CPC-EM) is published by the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine and affiliated with the MEDLINE-indexed Western Journal of Emergency Medicine. CPC-EM’s editor-in-chief is Rick A. McPheeters, DO, chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Kern Medical. It is indexed by PubMed, and full texts are available at PubMed Central. CPC-EM publishes four fully open-access issues each year. CPC-EM focuses on patient care case reports, images in the field of emergency medicine, and state-of-the-art medical, legal and clinicopathological cases that foster junior scholarship and contribute to the field of emergency medicine internationally. In addition, CPC-EM promotes the dissemination of important clinical content among established and developing emergency medicine programs, which is critical to provide a broader context for emergency physicians to understand clinical diagnoses, treatments and outcomes. Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health (WestJEM) is published by the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine. WestJEM’s editor-in-chief is Mark Langdorf, MD, MHPE, professor of clinical emergency medicine. The Department of Emergency Medicine is also a major sponsor of the premier open-access MEDLINE-indexed journal. Its full texts are available at eScholarship by the University of California, PubMed and PubMed Central. Emergency medicine is a specialty that closely reflects societal challenges and consequences of public policy decisions. The emergency department specifically deals with social injustice, health and economic disparities, violence and substance abuse, as well as disaster preparedness and response. WestJEM focuses on how emergency care affects the health of a community and its population and, conversely, how societal challenges affect the composition of the patient population seeking care in the emergency department. The development of better systems to provide emergency care, including technology solutions, is critical to enhancing population health. WestJEM is fully open access throughout the world, and authors keep their copyright. WestJEM has a two-year Clarivate impact factor of 3.985 and is ranked fifth among general emergency medicine journals in the world. It receives more than 3 million page views and downloads per year and is distributed electronically to more than 12,000 emergency medicine scholars around the world. WestJEM publishes six full-text online issues and two print issues each year for the sponsoring societies and subscribing departments. The journal has published an annual Special Issue on Emergency Medicine Education and Research since 2015, partnering with the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors and the Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine. In addition, there have been Special Issues on Firearm Violence Injury and Prevention and planned Special Issues on Social Emergency Medicine and Opiate Abuse and Addiction.
