Depending on the doses inhaled, particles, gases and vapors can have beneficial effects as pharmaceuticals or adverse effects as environmental or occupational air contaminants. While significant advances have been made in understanding inhaled materials, many aspects of aerosol dosimetry require further development.
To arrive at comprehensive characterizations of benefits or risks as well as uncertainties, integration of inhaled doses with hazard assessment, exposure estimates and risk-reduction strategies is critical.
This conference addresses these and other issues by bringing together diverse experts for a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary dialogue. The topics are varied, but each is related to advancing the understanding of internal doses received from inhaled substances.

The conference is being held the week before the American Association for Aerosol Research annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, to allow foreign participants to attend both conferences in one trip.
Peer-reviewed journal publication is planned for selected papers. Awards for outstanding student papers or posters will be made. Two honorary awards for trainees (graduate student and/or post-doctoral scholar) will be presented at the conference. Finalists will be chosen from the submitted abstracts and posters will be judged based on scientific content and clarity of presentation. Please indicate upon abstract submission if you would like to be considered for the competition. Trainee presenter must attend the conference in order to be considered a finalist.
Sixty-two abstracts were submitted to the conference, but only 40 platform presentations will fit in our 2 ½ day program. Because all of the abstracts are important, we will have a 2-part poster session. In part 1, authors will be able (if they wish) to speak and to show 1-3 slides to the full attendance. Part 2, poster viewing in the break area, will follow the presentations. Two hours will be devoted to this 2-part session, so there will be a rich opportunity for face-to-face interactions. Please locate your paper in the attached draft program and let us know if there are serious problems.
All authors who submitted abstracts, both platform and poster, are invited to submit a paper to the Conference Proceedings after the conference. We will have instructions for authors at the conference.
Platform presenters: Will be allowed 15 minutes for their presentation and 5 minutes for questions. Unless the session chairs want to hold questions to the end of their sessions. Due to time constraints, session chairs have been asked to adhere to session time limits.
Poster presenters: The easels allow for 4 ft x 4 ft (1.2 m x 1.2 m) posters. Pushpins will be available at the meeting to secure your poster. Posters should be mounted as soon as the presenter arrives at the conference center. Before a poster viewing period, an optional verbal presentation session is planned. To make a brief (1-2 minute) oral presentation on the significance/conclusions of your poster, you must sign-up at the registration desk and let us know if you want to project slides. A maximum of 3 slides may be shown. Plan to leave posters up through day two or until you leave the conference.
Audiovisual support is available, so slides may be sent to Leslie Owens (lpowens@uci.edu) in advance and an electronic copy should be brought to the meeting to be uploaded on the Center’s equipment. If you prefer to bring your own portable computer, you may. The audio-visual (AV) technician will provide assistance, and they request to meet with presenters with AV needs, if possible, before 9:00 a.m. the day of your presentation. Please inform us of your anticipated AV needs to assist with the smooth flow of presentations. Please check in with the Session Chair or Student Monitor before your session.

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, which is adjacent to the UCI campus, is an ideal conference center that provides free parking, on-site cuisine, as well as audiovisual and other support services. It also is close to a variety of hotels.
This center is designed to enhance communication in an atmosphere of intellectual excellence. The center is two miles from John Wayne Airport (SNA) and about 40 miles from Los Angeles International (LAX).
UCI has negotiated rates with a number of local hotels that offer a range of room rates. Each of the selected hotels has also been asked to provide a shuttle to and from John Wayne Airport. We will arrange separate shuttle services to and from the Beckman Center each day of the meeting.

All sessions are plenary and oral presentations are given in 20 minutes, including a few questions. Discussions after each session will be guided in order to identify new research opportunities.
Our 2005 conference, published in Inhalation Toxicology vol. 18 (10), 2006, and our second 2014 conference, published in the Journal of Aerosol Science vol. 99, 2016, used this successful format.
The program committee will select papers for plenary sessions that have value beyond narrow specialties and that will be presented by experts who have the ability to communicate with attendees from varied disciplines.
Other papers will have poster space and a plenary discussion session. Peer-reviewed papers and proceedings will capture the meeting and extend the impact beyond the conference attendees.
The conference welcomes students and student posters. Students who serve as session assistants may apply for a waiver of the registration fee. Contact us if you wish to serve as a session monitor.
