Dr. Suzanne Bakken’s research is at the intersection of informatics, evidence-based nursing practice, and underserved populations. Her primary interests include decision support systems, mobile computing, natural language processing, and use of web-based approaches for interactive health communication in underserved populations.

She is the director of the Precision in Symptom Self-Management Center, which advances the science of symptom self-management for Latinos, considering variables such as genetics, environmental factors, health behaviors, and interpersonal relationships. She also directs the Reducing Health Disparities Through Informatics Pre- and Post-doctoral Training program, which aims to train future informaticians to effectively use data science-enabled precision medicine approaches. Dr. Bakken is the current Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.
