Alfonso Vera, MD, a third-year resident in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior fully embraces the opportunity to bring a greater understanding of the Hispanic community into medical practice. “My mission is to bridge the gap between psychiatry and the Hispanic community in order to decrease the stigma of obtaining mental health care,” states Dr. Vera. “It is imperative to understand the language barriers and cultural nuances in the Hispanic community to appropriately treat, advocate, and heal.” Dr. Vera has received high praise from colleagues for his holistic approach to the care of Hispanic patients, as well as his dedication to recruiting Hispanic medical students into the field of psychiatry through his work as the department’s liaison to PRIME-LC and the Latino Medical Student Association. His accomplishments have also been recognized throughout the field, as a recipient of the American Psychiatric Association Foundation Diversity Leadership Fellowship.
