The Department of Neurology clerkship program provides an opportunity to learn about a variety of disorders that affect the nervous system. Third-year medical students participate in a month-long experience during which they learn the fundamentals of neurology from our neurology faculty and senior neurology residents. Faculty instructors practice general neurology as well as their own subspecialties. Students also work closely with members of the stroke and non-stroke teams on the inpatient service. Outpatient rotation clinics are also provided. Educational opportunities include Grand Rounds, neurophysiology rounds, stroke rounds, didactic sessions, group tutorials, and bedside and in-clinic teaching. This comprehensive experience exposes medical students to patients with many different types of neurological conditions, both in the hospital and clinic settings. By the completion of this rotation, students should be familiar with how to examine neurology patients and be more skilled in diagnosis and treatment. All medical students are required to take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) exam at the end of the clerkship. Neurology Electives The Department of Neurology offers electives in neuromuscular disorders, a neurology sub-internship, neurocritical care/ICU and research. More information about the department's elective offerings is available in the electives course catalog.
