Our Culture The Infectious Disease Fellowship program prides itself on providing a rigorous education in a nurturing, encouraging environment with careful attention to trainee quality of life and work-life balance. Our faculty and trainees are well-respected within the medical school and medical center community. The collaborative spirit we foster within and outside of our program is a point of great pride for us. Training Facilities The fellowship program is based at UCI Medical Center, the only academic medical center in Orange County. The center boasts Level 1 adult and Level 2 pediatric trauma centers, a burn unit, and a strong and growing transplant service. We launched a bone marrow transplant program in 2020 and have run an LVAD program since 2019. Our program is also affiliated with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Curriculum and Educational Activities The two-year program was established in 1971 and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Fellows receive 20 months of clinical training in infectious diseases with the remaining four months devoted to scholarly activity and clinical microbiology. A third year of fellowship may be arranged for those who wish to pursue further research. Orange County is home to a population of more than 3 million people from a broad range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our diverse community allows the UCI Medical Center Infectious Disease Service to embrace many complex and high-acuity cases, providing fellows with a unique opportunity to experience a wide range of pathologies during their training. Clinical rotations take place at UCI Medical Center in Orange and at the VA Long Beach Hospital. The program offers an excellent rotation in clinical microbiology at UCI Medical Center. Fellows are also involved in outpatient care at UCI and VA Long Beach Hospital. They participate in a continuity clinic, where they follow patients with a variety of illnesses, including bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, parasitic and nosocomial infections, and HIV. The division offers a variety of lectures and conferences. Fellows are expected to participate in weekly conferences such as Grand Rounds, infectious diseases core lectures, clinical microbiology rounds and Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Other conferences include AIDS Grand Rounds, Tuberculosis Grand Rounds, Journal Club and infection control meetings. Fellows are guided in their research block by a faculty mentor. Research opportunities in basic, clinical, translational or epidemiologic areas are available at UCI Medical Center, the VA and the university campus in Irvine.
