One year of accredited clinical training

Applicants must have one year of accredited clinical training in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice, emergency medicine, transitional year or any combination of these. The clinical year should be the first postgraduate year. All clinical training must be in an ACGME-, AOA- or RCPSC-approved program (or equivalent). Internships (PGY-1) are not offered by the department and must be independently obtained.

U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status

Our training program includes the Tibor Rubin Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach, as a participating site. In order to train or work at the VA, you must provide evidence of registration in the Selective Service program, or evidence of exempt status issued by the Veterans Affairs’ Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) through a Status of Information letter.

Application Due Date

Due to the large number of applicants each year, only a limited number can be granted interviews. Completed applications, with the exception of the medical school dean’s letter, must be received by November 15, approximately 21 months before the desired starting date. Positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
