DESCRIPTION

This course is structured for medical students to complete a rotation focusing on clinical and translational research at the Dermatology Clinical Research Center. An emphasis will be placed on understanding clinical research, institutional review board protocol, and research patient interaction. Individual time will be spent with the Director of the Clinical Research Center on developing a personal research project to be initiated and if possible, completed during the elective, with the goal of eventual publication or presentation at a medical meeting. Students will be exposed to Phase II and III studies on a variety of dermatological conditions. In addition, they will attend weekly dermatology teaching conferences and bimonthly Department of Dermatology Grand Rounds. Time will be given as well for reading and personal education. 

PREREQUISITES

Permission from the course director and approval of the Associate Dean of Clinical Education, as well as completion of third year required clerkships. Students will also need to complete the UCI Human Protection Training Course prior to the start of the elective. Please contact the site coordinator to confirm the required training when submitting an application for an elective. All training will need to be completed at least two weeks prior to the start of the elective. 

RESTRICTIONS

Associate Dean of Clinical Education approval must be obtained prior to beginning a research project. Students must submit a UCI School of Medicine student research student application.

Medical Students are graded using the following scale: Honors (H), Pass (P), Fail (F), and Incomplete (I). For further information, please review the Grading Policy.  

You have 30 days from the date of the grade to appeal any aspect of this grade.  Please contact your Clerkship/course Director should you have any questions.

Requirements for “Pass” 

To receive a grade of Pass, students must demonstrate successful performance in all the following areas:

Requirements for “Honors”

Grounds for “Incomplete”

You will not be issued a grade until all elements of the course have been completed.

REMEDIATION

Remediation, if needed, will be designed by the Course Director to suit the issue at hand. 

Grounds for “Fail”: You will receive a grade of "Fail" if the requirements for passing the course have not been met. Please refer to the Grading Policy for the impact of the "Fail" grade to the transcript.
