White Coat 2022

At the UCI Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, we strive for inclusive excellence by championing the principles of Access, Leadership, Inclusion, Growth and Nurturing (ALIGN). These five pillars guide our work to ensure environments where every individual feels respected, supported and empowered to bring their unique perspectives and talents to achieve common goals. We go beyond representation to foster meaningful participation, engagement and a true sense of belonging for all.

Mission Statement

The UCI Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior is devoted to building a culture of belonging and excellence. As leaders in research, education and clinical care, we believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation in psychiatry. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for trainees, colleagues and patients and we recognize, celebrate and embrace diversity across various dimensions, including but not limited to race, color, ethnicity, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ability, gender identity or expression, national origin, veteran status, socio-economic status and genetic information.

ALIGN represents our core pillars that bring this mission to life:

  • Access – Addressing barriers to care and advancing mental health equity, ensuring all individuals have equal access to high-quality services.
  • Leadership – Developing and supporting leaders who champion equity and inclusion at every level of academic medicine.
  • Inclusion – Creating environments that welcome and value the contributions of individuals from all backgrounds, cultivating authentic belonging.
  • Growth – Supporting the personal and professional growth of our trainees and faculty through mentorship, education and scholarship while striving to improve clinical care and patient outcomes.
  • Nurturing – Building and sustaining a culture of care that strengthens resilience, wellbeing and respect for the communities we serve.
