The LCME is the national accrediting organization for U.S. medical schools. UCI School of Medicine received its most recent full eight-year reaccreditation in 2017. News & Events: #MDsToo Student Mistreatment Prevention Curriculum From 2018–22, UCI School of Medicine was awarded an American Medical Association Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation grant to develop and launch a medical student mistreatment prevention curriculum, #MDsToo. During the #MDsToo curriculum, participants are introduced to the KIND (knowledge-sharing, inclusive, non-discriminatory, developmentally appropriate) framework for modeling positive teacher-learner interactions and detecting mistreatment. Using KIND, faculty members and residents identify and categorize mistreatment in a series of video cases depicting mistreatment and reflect on their own experiences with mistreatment. Educators receive the #MDsToo curriculum during new faculty orientation as well as resident orientation and faculty teaching skills training offered by the Office of Graduate Medical Education. If you have not received this training and would like more information, reach out to meded@hs.uci.edu. Follow the Zot Quality Improvements in the monthly Medical Education newsletter for additional updates that support our students. LCME Spotlight Standard 3: Academic and Learning Environments LCME Standard 3 focuses on ensuring that a medical education program occurs in professional, respectful and intellectually stimulating academic and clinical environments, including the recognition of the benefits of diversity. The School of Medicine has a zero-tolerance policy for negative behaviors in the learning environment and has implemented the #MDsToo faculty and resident training to support this. Further actions taken to support a positive learning environment for our students include: Formalization of the Office of Belonging, Equity and Empowerment (BEE) to promote inclusive excellence as recognized through the 2023 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award Providing students opportunities to pursue research with faculty including the ICTS Medical Student Research Program Recruiting a diverse population of students through our innovative mission-based programs.
