UCI School of Medicine is once again the recipient of the 2023 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity publication in higher education. After an inaugural win in 2019, this marks the third time that the School of Medicine was named a HEED award recipient.

Our school was lauded for interdisciplinary collaboration and advances made in education, research and wellness initiatives designed to enhance campus culture and impart change.

The award committee recognized the impact of our mission-based programs (PRIME-LCPRIME LEAD-ABCHEAL-IM) in contributing to greater diversity in the healthcare workforce and improved health equity. Our community engagement efforts, faculty mentorship and standards for ensuring inclusive excellence in the recruitment of diverse faculty, students and staff at all levels was also noted and well received.

As a 2023 HEED award recipient, we embrace yet another opportunity to extend our school-wide commitment to a national audience while showcasing the UCI School of Medicine as an institution where diverse faculty, learners, and staff can thrive and belong.

The comprehensive HEED Award application process illuminated our progress towards inclusive excellence in medicine and provided an additional vantage point to assess our current diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts. We celebrate this success and reinforce our charge to lead innovative change through our mission to Discover. Teach. Heal.

The Health Professions HEED Award is the only national honor recognizing U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, veterinary, allied health and other health schools and centers that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses.

The award recipients will be featured in the December 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
