BSL-3 4-day Laboratory Training

The UC Irvine training team has designed this course to be a flexible, welcoming environment for all biosafety researchers, professionals and staff. This training will allow you to practice hands-on, in a real-life BSL-3 laboratory without the risk of exposure to anything hazardous.

Laboratory Training is a four-day intensive in-person training aimed to prepare both new and current staff with the fundamental skills for working in BSL-3 laboratories. It combines hands on practical exercises with classroom instruction.

  • Risk assessment and management
  • Waste management
  • Laboratory management
  • Safety procedures
  • Emergency management
  • Biosafety cabinet practices and procedures
  • Small and large spill decontamination
  • Donning and doffing PPE
  • Laboratory operations and preventative maintenance
  • Data and material management
  • Inventory and records management
  • Biosecurity

Also available: One-day Annual Refresher Training for experienced laboratory staff.

Continuing education units are provided through The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) Professional Acknowledgement for Continuing Education (P.A.C.E) and ABSA International Credential Maintenance Program.

Course Objectives


  • Review key biosafety and biosecurity principles in line with guidance documents like the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, Select Agent Regulations, NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules, etc.
  • Apply BSL-3 best practices while perform hands-on tasks within our BSL-3 Training Center
  • Identify different types of high-level BSL-3 PPE and practice with multiple donning and doffing sessions

  • UC Personnel: $150 Refundable registration required
  • Academic/Government: $2,660
  • Corporate: $2,795

Course materials and daily lunch/snacks are included in the course registration fee.
